What Is Placenta Encapsulation?

Placental encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills. Traditionally, then taken by the mother and is believed to bring numerous health benefits. It is normally taken shortly after giving birth, during a woman’s menstrual period, many believe that it helps counter some of the symptoms of menopause.

Substantial studies on Placentophagy protocol in management of postpartum:‎

“Giving…placenta to a new mother following birth has become standard protocol among a growing number of midwives in the United States. By nourishing the blood and fluids, endocrine glands and organs, Placenta will …reduce or stop postpartum bleeding, speed up recovery, boost energy and relieve postpartum blues.” Homes, Peter. 1993. Jade Remedies, Snow Lotus Press, 352.”

Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation

  • Reduces the chance of “baby blues” and postpartum depression
  • Increases breast milk production
  • Provides natural pain relief from the labor and birthing process
  • Increases iron, vitamin B, and energy levels
  • Increases oxytocin levels (the love hormone that promotes bonding and well-being)
  • Decreases infection and enhances wound healing
  • Stabilizes hormones and moods
  • Reduces postpartum bleeding

Why we use the RAW Method for Processing-

The RAW Method for preparation of your placenta, omits the heating and herbal process that other processors utilize.  It is believed that steaming the placenta destroys some of the essential nutrients.  A piece of the placenta can also be used to create a tincture.

Placenta Capsules

  • This process of placenta encapsulation usually produces around 100-175 capsules, depending on the size of your placenta.
  • Capsules last many years when stored in the freezer. Take them for PMS, low milk supply, fertility challenges, and even menopause!
  • Capsules should be taken with a snack or a meal to help the powder settle and reconstitute in your stomach.

Placenta Tincture

  • This process of placenta encapsulation usually produces around 100-175 capsules, depending on the size of your placenta.
  • Capsules last many years when stored in the freezer. Take them for PMS, low milk supply, fertility challenges, and even menopause!
  • Capsules should be taken with a snack or a meal to help the powder settle and reconstitute in your stomach.
  • Placenta tincture is an added bonus in that it can be used in addition to and long after the capsules are gone. By tincturing a small piece of the placenta in a high-grade alcohol, you can prolong the benefits of your placental hormones. The tincture can be used in any time of trauma, transition, emotional distress, and during menopause and ease your symptoms.
  • The tincture is allowed to sit for at least 6-8 weeks before use. Store in a cool, dark place, and the tincture should last for many years.
  • The dosage is 7-10 drops of tincture in a full glass of juice or tea.

I used Julie for my placenta encapsulation and have no regrets with this decision. In fact, I think it was one of the smartest decisions I made with regards to my birth plan! I notice the pills help even my mood; there have been many times where I get the postpartum blues, and when I take the placenta pills, I notice within an hour, that feeling has been lifted – they are incredible. I feel like I sleep better when I take them as well, most likely because they seem to “balance” me out. I still have my tincture that I will be saving for later.
I highly recommend this service; I had my son at almost midnight on a Friday and my pills were ready for me by Monday. Julie also made the umbilical cord into a heart, which was so special to me. You only get one chance with this, so take advantage of her great services and choose encapsulation!

This was my third pregnancy and I finally decided to do placenta encapsulation after this birth. I used Julie for the placenta encapsulation service and she was wonderful. I spoke with her during my pregnancy and she was so sweet, positive, and knowledgeable and was always a text or phone call away. I had not previously done placenta encapsulation, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from the pills. I’m so glad I took them, I can completely tell a difference from my previous 2 births. They definitely helped my milk supply and lessened my bleeding. I feel they also helped with the after-birth cramping; it was so minimal this time. I would recommend them to everyone. Julie was very professional and did a great job with this service! Her pregnancy meditation is beautiful to listen to as well. 🙂

I am so thankful that I decided to opt for placenta encapsulation. Before my little one was born, I talked to my midwives, my doctor, my pediatrician, and my new-mom friends, all of whom had very positive feedback about the process. Now that I’ve done it, I truly believe that it made all the difference in my postpartum mental state and energy level. Despite the normal lack of sleep and fluctuating hormones that come with having a newborn, I was able to thoroughly enjoy this special once-in-a-lifetime period of bonding, feeding, and snuggles.

Interestingly, my body let me know when I was ready to reduce the dosage. When I tried it before I was ready, I ended up with a bit of blues and lacked the energy and motivation that I had previously. Similarly, when I ran out of the capsules, I stumbled a bit, unfortunately just as I was due back at work. Thanks to helpful instructions from Julie and strong encouragement from my doctor, I started taking the placenta tincture. I now feel even more positive and have more drive than previously. I’m finally tackling my To-Do list, and it feels great!

Julie has been wonderful to work with. She was there for us even though we were late lining up all of the postpartum care and contacted her only a couple of weeks before my due date. What a lifesaver! She returned with the capsules and tincture kit less than 48 hours after collecting the placenta from the hospital. She has shown infinite patience with my repeated questions and has been so helpful walking me through the tincture finalization process. Julie is such a positive person with great energy. She was the first person, outside of hospital personnel, who we trusted to hold our new baby, which is the best compliment we can give.

Thank you, Jules the Doula! <3

Having gone through postpartum depression with our first baby for roughly a year, Jules suggested placenta encapsulation with our second. I am so grateful we decided to do it this time around! Although I still have symptoms of PPD, I can tell the placenta encapsulation greatly improved my mood and ability to adapt to stress during the first few weeks of the fourth trimester. My body seemed to heal quicker, and my milk supply was amazing. I also have the placenta tincture to help me now, months after the baby arrived. I use the tincture in a hot cup of tea in the morning when I wake up feeling sad. I notice my mood shifts to a cheerier state shortly after taking the tincture, along with a boost of energy to help me get through the day, especially after a night of cluster feeding our little one. Jules' guidance and intuition are invaluable when welcoming a new baby into your life. We are so happy to have connected with her!
